READ: Matthew 5:21-22
"You're familiar with the command to the ancients, 'Do not murder.' I'm telling you that anyone who is so much as angry with a brother or sister is guilty of murder. Carelessly call a brother 'idiot!' and you just might find yourself hauled into court. Thoughtlessly yell 'stupid!' at a sister and you are on the brink of hellfire. The simple moral fact is that words kill"
REFLECT: "Sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me"...is bull. You and I both know that words can hurt. Often, words spoken to us shape the type of person we become. When your mom told you over and over that she loves you, that stuck with you, didn't it? When your friend told you were talented at that one thing, you believed it, right? The words we use, matter.
Why do they matter? They matter, because for God what God speaks he creates (Genesis 1-3). So, if he speaks something to you (by his word, by his spirit, or the multiple other ways he speaks to us) he intends to carry out and create what he speaks. But why do they matter for us? They matter for us, because we are made in God's image, and what we speak, we also create. Think about it. When we speak carelessly out of our anger about someone, it shapes how we think about them, right? We've created an idea about them....an idea, they they may also come to share.
Have you ever thought about words you use. Here, in Matthew 5 we are reminded that words spoken in anger...kill. But they don't just destroy others, they destroy us. When you speak out of anger towards another person...you don't just hurt the other person, you hurt yourself. Remember: words create. And they create in you what they speak through you.
