A lesson on the beach with Elizabeth

I took Elizabeth to the beach
I smiled wide as she explored the sand, touched the sea shells, threw rocks, and pointed at birds.
I also saw how she became fixated on the other children there
She stared at them
and was transfixed by their mannerisms

she was...studying them

I felt myself growing anxious
My heart said, "look at Jesus, Elizabeth"

I worry for her.
The checkout lines in the grocery store -- airbrushed girls --self idolatry
Bieber fever -- human commodification

I felt unsettled
that sand and seashells
rocks and birds
don't have as much to say as the magazines and marketing.

"How could I have brought a little girl into such a difficult world?", I thought.
My heart replied, "maybe your little girl is exactly what this difficult world needs"

Today was simple....

It doesn't take much to have a simple day. We need those sometimes....

First task: Exercise. It's nice out...so, cycling sounds good. 50km (UBC loop, marine drive, Iona Beach and back) lots of rolling hills...fun.

Second Task: Represent the new Dodgers shirt we got from Oma and Opa. GO DODGERS!

Third task: Take more pictures of our daughter so the 10 people who visit this blog will come back.

Fourth Task: Go to the Beach and CHILL

and that's our simple day.

Resting actively

We are going to work on Monday this coming week...so we thought we'd make today....Sabbath rest. Well...kinda. Resting actively...as we like to say.

I got up early and went for a ride.

Took a couple hours...which was good...and actually my map doesn't include an additional 10km I did. So 60km in 2:10 over varied terrain. Not great for a dedicated cyclist...but not deplorable. (Unless you're a bro of mine named Mr. V, Davey, or Jaybird)

Then, Heidi went on a 20km ride for some cross-training while I watched Elizabeth. I'm the most important man in her life...you know.

Then....it was so nice outside...we decided to do a little picnic at the beach. It was fun!

Now, it's about 5:00..which means dinner time. Yay! Then, after that...we are going to put Elizabeth to sleep...and we are gonna have a date night! Can someone say conversation and popcorn and a chick-flick?...yes...I said it...chick flick....that's what we do....deal with it.

peace

Doin good

We've been havin' fun lately. Ya know...it really doesn't take much to have some fun.

It just takes...1. a good attitude 2. a good friend 3. a good effort.

Our fun went something like this: "Dang man...We don't have much time or energy....we can't get into the mountains and have time for all the stuff we have to do today....let's just do some bouldering at Riley Park...grab some burgers and chill at the beach"...and in 3 hours...wa-la

Riley Park is a park in the middle of Vancouver which has a really cool man-made boulder in it. It's got lots of problems, mostly v0-v3. Its pretty fun. We try to do laps on it by traversing around it. That makes for a pretty good workout.

...then it was off to the beach. It was SO nice. Kits beach looks onto Vancouver's famous North Shore Mountains. We've spent a lot of time in those mountains...but today, we were content just lookin' at them while we ate burgers and had yam fries. Oh yeah...

Heidi's 27 weeks now...less than three months to go...yay!

Laps Laps Laps

I (Joe) hopped on the bike today.

It was a VERY short ride.

Broke a spoke...had to walk my bike home. Suckoth.

Did I call it quits? Should of. Got on another bike and went for a burn.

Tire got messed up...had to walk my bike home. again...suckoth.

Did I call it quits? Should of. Fixed the tire and finished my short ride (20 minutes) on HILLS. Love em'

Tonight, after dinner Heidi's been itching to get out.

Her idea: Go for a 4-5 mile run....interspersing her wide variety of exercises (walking, lunges, and push ups). Her run goes along the beach. Today, I will ride a bike behind her while she runs. We will talk the whole way...good times.
