Month of Love - Day 27 - Communication
Today...heidi said to me, "You are not making sense"
It reminded me of this video:
It reminded me of this video:
A good quote from Richard Rohr
Fasting, along with prayer and almsgiving, are the three spiritual disciplines that are taught in all of the monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Jesus himself repeats these in the Sermon on the Mount, in Matthew 6:1-18. They are three ways of "de-centralizing the self": Prayer de-centralizes my mind, almsgiving de-centralizes my heart, and fasting de-centralizes my body. (Almost enneagramatic!)

Ash Wednesday
From a great website that I will be following through the month of Lent.
From this website.
What unnecessary stimulations and distractions do I allow in my life to blind me to, and numb me from, being present to what is mine do as I walk the journey with Jesus though his passion, death, and resurrection?

Monday's Sabbath Rest
What is something we love more than many other things in the world?
ROCK CLIMBING!
mmmm....the way granite feels on the skin. The smell of the trees. The view. LOVE IT.
Today we decided to do some winter climbing in squamish.
Forecast: RAIN.
But its worth a try....right?

Not looking good
...so what do we do?
Investigate. Conclusion: not good. major seepage.
So what does any rational person do....in light of this catastrophe?
Drink coffee and ponder
But...because patience is a virtue and Squamish has Wall Mart...we were able to spend the day hanging out, eating, and waiting for the sun.
and eventually...
It came!

yay!
And then...the sun set....and it started to rain as we rapped off and headed home
Great Sabbath rest.
The end.

Month of Love - Day 21 - Sex
What follows is an excerpt from some of the work of Paddy Ducklow, Counselor and Pastor of CapChurch. He was a proff of mine. You can download the entire article here.
Great Sex: Reclaiming a Christian Sexual Ethic
God has designed us to move beyond ourselves:
Genesis 2:18 The LORD God said, "It is not
good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."
God has written into our sexuality a call to community:
Genesis 2:23-25 The man said, "This is
now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of
man." For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they
will become one flesh. The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
God gave us sexuality for peoplemaking:
Ecclesiastes 11:5 “As you do not know the path of the
wind, or how the body is formed in a mother's womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things.”
God wants us to have an earthy spirituality:
I Corinthians 7:5 “Do not deprive each other except
by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come
together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.”

Month of Love - Day 20 - Intimacy
Here are some good questions we came across today:

We take good pictures....but does the image of love represent the reality? It could. It could not. Ask the questions...
- What is the difference between having sex and making love?
- Is there anything about our intimate life that could be improved upon?
- How can we better connect heart-to-heart?
- What are your dreams for the future?
- Do we regularly connect soul-to-soul?
- How could we make connecting soul-to-soul a priority?
- Is there anything I need to seek your forgiveness for in this area of our lives?
- What do you love most about our marriage?

Month of Love - Day 19 - Fireproof
Have you seen the movie "Fireproof"?
We saw it recently. Take a look at the trailer:
Fireproof Teaser Trailer from Mike Stecker on Vimeo.
Our thoughts.
We liked it.
and - it was cheesy and poorly acted
We appreciated it.

We understand why the movie is important.

We recommend it.
so - be prepared for cheese and poor acting.

Month of Love - Day 18
From Henri Nouwen's book "The Inner Voice of Love"
Do not hesitate to love and to love deeply.
You might be afraid of the pain that deep love can cause. When those you love deeply reject you, leave you, or die, your heart will be broken. But that should not hold you back from loving deeply. The pain that comes from deep love makes your love ever more fruitful. It is like a plow that breaks the ground to allow the seed to take root and grow into a strong plant. Every time you experience the pain of rejection, absence, or death, you are faced with a choice. You can become bitter and decide not to love again, or you can stand straight in your pain and let the soil on which you stand become richer and more able to give life to new seeds.
The more you have loved and have allowed yourself to suffer because of your love, the more you will be able to let your heart grow wider and deeper. When your love is truly giving and receiving, those whom you love will not leave your heart even when they depart from you. They will become part of your self and thus gradually build a community within you.
Those you have deeply loved become part of you. The longer you live, there will always be more people to be loved by you and to become part of your inner community. The wider your inner community becomes, the more easily you will recognize your own brothers and sisters in the strangers around you. Those who are alive within you will recognize those who are alive around you. The wider the community of your heart, the wider the community around you. Thus the pain of rejection, absence, and death can become fruitful. Yes, as you love deeply the ground of your heart will be broken more and more, but you will rejoice in the abundance of the fruit it will bear.

A Story - A Short Form
Interested in our recent climbing trip...?
Wondering what we did...?
OK. Fine. Sit down, and follow our journey...
On February 8th we flew from Vancouver to Seattle and then into Las Vegas.

We met up with Jameson and his buddy Tyler (who is now our buddy...yay!) at the airport. We drove out to the 13-mile campground about 20 minutes outside of Las Vegas.
It was freezing, windy, and quite unpleasant. And, to top it off....we woke up to this:

Freek snow storm! Climbing trip = ruined.
...or so we thought. You see, with sandstone, you need to let it completely dry before you climb on it. It needs at least 24 hours and sometimes 48 hours to dry out. Otherwise you are going to damage the rock, break holds, and your protection has a better chance of not pulling out of the rock.
But...thankfully, later in the morning, the sun came out and the wind started howling, and it began to look like this:

So, we toured around a little bit, knowing that if no precipitation fell in the next 24 hours, we could possibly climb on Tuesday. So, like everybody should do when you are waiting around...we grabbed a latte in Vegas.

After lunch, we thought, "hey, its really really nice outside! We can't climb on sandstone, but lets find some dry limestone to climb." So, we did exactly that:

It was a great way to finish a climbing day that could have potentially been lost.
Tuesday was awesome. We woke up to this:
and this...

so we did lots of this...

Wednesday was just as good. What did we do? Find Rock!!
and climb!!

But ya know...at the end of the day...it's not about climbing. It's not even about beautiful places. Don't get us wrong...we love these things...but its ultimately about:

Off to Red Rocks - Climbing Trip

For the 1-2 of you who actually follow this blog, you will be aware that Heidi and I are not in tip-top shape. In fact, we are far from it.
I am trying to get over bronchitis and Heidi's MCL sprain is still healing.
and...guess what the weather forecast is projecting??????? Any guesses????????
It looks something like this:

BUT. All hope is not lost!
We will try to keep our attitudes in check, allowing us to salvage this trip and not let this vacation go to waste. It will be a good chance to reconnect with God and each other in a beautiful place.
My brother and his friend Tyler are going to meet us there, so it should be really cool all hanging out together.
We will be back next Thursday, and will post pictures upon our return. Because we have absolutely NO DESIRE to use Twitter (i.e. those who tweet are freekin' crazy), this blog will go silent until Thursday.
You can always look through a photo gallery by clicking pictures on the photo reel on the right hand side of the page, or, you can click the Picasa logo to visit our entire gallery. There you will find our particular journey through sacred spaces...enjoy

Month of Love - Day 5
Well, as you know, February is the month of love and this month we are taking some time to blog about it.
You may be wondering, "Why did Joe or Heidi not blog yesterday?"
Answer: Joe came down with bronchitis and a fever.
So, what has love looked like in the past 2 days?
Joe's response:
When Heidi gets me medicine for my headaches
- she is showing me that she loves me
When Heidi gets up in the middle of the night to get another blanket for my chills
- she is showing me that she loves me
When Heidi doesn't retaliate when I am irritable (due to my uncomfort)
- she is showing me that she loves me
When Heidi looses sleep on my behalf
- she is showing me that she loves me

The Month of Love...Day 3
As you know, for this entire month, I will be blogging about LOVE.
Why? ...Because it is the month of LUV...
I Luv Luv.
Today's tip is adapted from the work of G. Small. In any relationship, communication is an important factor.
Consider the acronym:
L - Listen
U - Understand
V - Validate
When we go to a restruant, this is precisely what happens with our waitor. He listens to our order, repeats it so both he and I are satisfied that I have been properly heard, and he validates our choice by saying something like, "Wonderful, very good choice" or "not a problem".
So, a cheesy outro from Dr. Joe (looking directly into camera with a sense of satisfaction and importance...)
L-U-V somebody you LOVE today

February 1st - The Month of Love
Well folks...
We are officially in February. This is the month of love.
It is no secret that www.joeandheidiwhite.com is really a subliminal message.
The "and" in www.joeandheidiwhite.com is an acronym:
a = amply
n = needs
d = da
...so what I am really saying is: joe amply needs da heidi white
SO. For this entire month of love, I am going to post on luuvy-duuvy topics and topics which are useful for your boy toy, your man magnet and your house hottie. Married people, daters, engageders, and wanna-be wanted fokes are gonna LOVE this month of LOVE here at www.joeANDheidiwhite.com. I am the new Dr. Phil.
And, for my first post...a great movie from the good people at Igniter Media Group.
